Youth hockey has flourished as a sport for many reasons, but could not have done so without the many individuals who work or volunteer in various capacities. We all know that the large majority of these people do so for the love of the game.
Talented and motivated people are behind all successful organizations. A critical and effective way to attract and retain talented and motivated people is to provide them the structure and tools they need to succeed. Here’s an example of how this works:
Visionaries have created structure to provide rules, and train our coaches and referees, and this has done wonders for youth hockey. Among many things, quality coaches develop individuals as players and people, and good officiating prevents injury.
Furthermore, this structure has paved the way for thousands of individuals to become qualified to coach and to officiate , and has opened the door to empower thousands of talented people to get involved and stay involved in youth hockey. It should be obvious that this structure is a critical factor in the success of our leagues and organizations.
Take away this structure; ask yourself where would we be?
At youthhockey.com we bring structure to scheduling. We take the headache out of scheduling, so you can create better schedules in less time. We do this by addressing the inefficiencies in the way most leagues schedule.
To illustrate these inefficiencies let’s look at examples of how some leagues schedule:
In this league, schedulers are asked to drive as far as 100 miles (inefficiency 1), to meet at a hotel which cost money (inefficiency 2), for a weekend in the middle of August (inconvenience), to get everyone in a room for 2 days to schedule for Midgets, Bantams and Pee Wee’s (mites and squirts required additional meetings later) (inefficiency 3, 4, and 5). Each scheduler has his own unique way of doing things. Some bring laptops and others date minders and number two pencils with erasers (structure?).
Many teams reserve more than 20 home slots per team (inefficiency 6), to make it easier to schedule the 11 home league games they are required to do. Slots are then filled on a first come first serve basis (inefficiency 7). And in many cases canceled and rescheduled as the meeting goes on (inefficiency 8).
Schedulers call each other one at a time (inefficiency 9). The call features a series of request “can your team play on ….” “Do you have a home slot on ….” (inefficiency 10) all this to create a tentative schedule (inefficiency 11) as sometimes things need to be changed as with each call finding a match becomes more difficult (inefficiency 12).
As you already knew, the current methods can be improved upon. And weather you schedule for an entire league, an organization or just one team we can help you.
